Jewish singer Mae Muller has said it is an “absolute dream” to have been picked to represent the UK at this year’s Eurovision competition.
The 25-year-old will perform her original single I Wrote A Song in Liverpool in May.
Muller, who was raised in Kentish Town, previously revealed that her grandfather fled Nazi persecution in Germany.
Speaking to the BBC after her selection was announced, Muller said she had accepted the call to appear immediately when asked, adding: “I don't think it gets much bigger than Eurovision, it's such a part of history as well."
Discussing her music Muller said: "[It’s] empowering, sometimes a bit tongue in cheek but it always comes back to the same message of, you know, knowing your worth.
“When I listen to music, and when I was younger listening to music, that's what I kind of yearned for. So I guess it's just honest, sometimes a bit sassy, storytelling."
Muller was chosen by the BBC and management company TaP Music, who also helped to select last year’s Eurovision contestant Sam Rider.
Asked about her preparations for the performance, Muller said: "We're working on it every day, vocal training, choreo[graphy], and I know it's Eurovision so we've got to do it right, we've got to come correct. It's got to be big.”
The young pop star was first signed to record label Capitol when she was just 19 after uploading a song to an online music platform.
She has listed Sade, Prince, Gwen Stefani, Lily Allen and Florence Welch as her musical inspirations.
Better Days, a single released by Muller in 2021, peaked at number 31 in the British charts.
In July 2020, responding to antisemitism in the music industry, Muller posted to Instagram: "To all my Jewish friends and followers, I love you. There is no place for anti semitism in this world. I'm very proud of my Jewish roots and so should you.
“My grandad fled from nazi Germany to the UK when he was 12 years old on his own. I always find myself trying to imagine how scared he must have been.
“So f**k Wiley and f**k anyone who shares those views. I stand with all my Jewish friends, family, supporters and always will."
The Eurovision final will take place on May 13, 2023.
