Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis has congratulated Gareth Southgate on his legacy, following the England Manager’s resignation earlier today.

The Chief Rabbi praised Southgate for setting a standard “for how a role-model and representative of our country should conduct themselves”.

“In a job which has subjected him to a degree of national scrutiny and criticism that most people will never appreciate, he has been a real mensch, remaining dignified, respectful and considerate throughout,” said Rabbi Mirvis.

He continued: “His legacy will be a generation of young people who have learned from him that leadership is primarily about decency, integrity and bringing honour to others. That is worth more to our country than any trophy”.

Gareth Southgate announced he would step down as England’s manager this morning, after eight years leading the team.

“As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England,” Southgate said. “It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all. But it’s time for change, and for a new chapter. Sunday’s final in Berlin against Spain was my final game as England manager”.

Southgate’s resignation comes just after England’s loss to Spain in the finals of the European Championship on Sunday.

Despite the devastating 2-1 loss, Southgate remained positive about the future of English football. “The squad we took to Germany is full of exciting young talent and they can win the trophy we all dream of,” Southgate said. “I am so proud of them, and I hope we get behind the players and the team at St George’s Park and the FA who strive every day to improve English football, and understand the power football has to drive positive change.”
